Embrace the Change

After a long hiatus from blogging, i am back again~

The month of May will be a month for big changes for me. The biggest changes will come at work. First the labbers waved goodbye to Timothy ( see photo) who brought to us many laughter and tears from laughter. The quick-thinking attachment student was warm and friendly and will be missed.

Just before he left, we also had two new addition to the lab, a new chemist and a new lab technician. New chemist Soon Lai has already joined my half of the shift. The Spur fan can hopefully gel well with Daniel and my working style. I'm also saddened by the fact that my current lab partner and my boss will be leaving for New Jersey, US in May for half a year. When they return they will then concentrate on the RnD side of our company. I'm going to find it hard to envisage both of them gone from the lab sob~

On a the other hand though, i'm excited at the prospect of having a new boss, Cui Cui! I have always gotten along very well with her and i hope our relationship will not change given that our hierarchy in the company has now changed.

Lab Technician Wan Qing has been here for 2 months now and she's coming along fine. I really admire her working style and i think she is perfect for working in the lab.

Also in May, i will be moving to my new home. The home is not as new as my current home but it is a stone's throw away from the MRT and shopping centre. I've calculated and i expect to slash my waking up time by 30 min every working day... haha....means i get extra snooze time in bed every morning. I hope my kitty Frosty will be able to get used to this new place. Another thing i like about this place is the peace and serenity of its location. It is hidden from the main road and my window faces another block about 100m away.

Probably no blogging in the first week of May. So i'll make up by blogging more todae.

Lessons Learnt in a Week

The week began with a birthday celebration of an old friend. It was a amiable girls outing (incidentally all the guys were out of town; 1 in UK, 1 in Australia, 1 in Malaysia). We spent the night away at a cafe equipped with various board games. Most of them are not even sold in this part of the world! The best part of the night was that the birthday presents were matched in colours. Everything came in green and white! I'm not surprised considering the gifts were bought by Shin Yen ( who on the same night insisted that all of us wear pink to her wedding reception in October!)

On the same day, my super mama foiled an attempt to burglar my house back in Malaysia. A thief used tools found in my garden to make a hook and used a pole to get to the goodies in my parent's room. Unfortunately for the thief, my mama instintively woke up at the right time to spoil the party. Even if my mama did not wake up, the thief was hooking the wrong bag. The bag he thought was a handbag was actually a bag full of my mom's curlers. Probably the thief needed a perm job! =) Great experience for my sister who made a trip to the police station to lodge a report. I've never been to a police station myself.

Lastly, there were lessons to be learnt in the lab as well. Angel set her hair and labcoat on fire after a minor glitch. It sounds like a scene from a Looney Tunes cartoon but it reminded me to be extra careful in the lab. Just a thought, i've always wondered why NONE of the long-haired girls in my lab ever tie their hair? I always thought it was part of a safety procedure to have your long hair tied ( sort of like you have to wear safety glasses once you enter a lab). Also i learnt that to dispose of a concentrated acid, you need to dilute it with water and not neutralise it with a base! Haha! Whoever wants to find out the outcome, feel free to try it . You will create a mini volcano, trust me!

P/s Wilson has been destroyed by my Senior Chemist sob sob...

What is Wilson?

On a fateful day this week, Miss Puffy and Mr Daniel Tan of Croda Singapore Pte Ltd created a cute little companion for their counterpart who was working on night shift. For those who have worked the graveyard shift before, they'll testify that it is the life of a recluse. Hence the creation of Wilson.

I have attached the front, back and side profile of Wilson. Have you guessed what Wilson is right now? If not read on. It was a painstaking effort in whipping Wilson into the perfect shape and hairstyle. He had a few mishaps on his hairstyling procedure. He was dropped accidentally and became a mass of hair all over his head. He also had to have his head changed to smaller size due to high demand of the bigger head in the lab ( we got a scolding from the lab technician due to shortage).

Why is he called Wilson? Ever watched the movie Castaway by Tom Hanks? He created a head out of a volleyball he found in a crate and the brand was Wilson, hence the name.

Answer : Wilson is a lab magnetic stirrer propped on a plastic dropper. His hair was metal filing we attracted from the base of our reactor pot in the lab. We used a bigger magnet to style his hair and create his sideburns. Lastly, his eyes, nose and mouth were sketched using whiteboard marker =)

The Brady Bunch

Haven't been updating this blog for a while. It takes sometime to come up with new inspirations every now and then. I guess every single person who visits my blog is out in the working world. Take a glance around you, what kind of colleagues are you blessed with? Here, i have classified some of my colleagues with colourful personalities. Do you spot any similarities between yours and mine?

Mr Friendly

Everyone's best friend. He goes around doing his work getting along with everyone in the process. Happily married with 2 kids, his heart is pure as gold.

The Smoker

Someone who sits atop the hierarchy of a particular branch. Puffed smoke to get to the top (when i say smoke, i don't mean cigarettes, go figure). Has a hollow brain with limited knowledge but a big mouth with a lot of logic.

Little Miss Muffet

A young girl who is really clumsy ( mind u i'm working in a chemical lab) but is very loveable. Some one u would compare to a squid. Has no clue regarding what's going on around her most of the time.

Local Louis Vuitton

A married woman who has well-manicured nails and rebonded hair. Passes her time in the office comparing Burberry bags, LV wallets and Manolo Blahnik shoes. Speaks with a shrill voice and laughs like a donkey.

Big Brother

A brotherly figure who protects all who are under attack. Speaks with great maturity and thinks from all angle before making a statement. Loves to keep a low profile.

The Mad Dog

Runs around barking mad and biting off people's asses. Doubles up as a puppet master and ventriloquist by manipulating hapless victims in a semi-symbiotic relationship. Comes with a neat crew-cut and drinks red bull.

Mild Mannered Boss

A boss who keeps mum unless repeatedly provoked. Eases on the pressure given to subordinates. Has the mentality "If it ain't broken, why fix it".

Loudspeaker Lady

A super-friendly lady whose voice can be heard all the way to Indonesia. Makes you guffaw with her antics . Energetic like the bunny from the Duracell Ad and has a smile plastered on her face 24/7.

Girl's Best Bud

A single man who mingles with girls talking about bags and watches. Takes good care of his complexion and uses moisturiser and lip balm. One day hopes to discover the anti-aging elixir and stay youthful forever.

Girl Next Door

Girl with long hair coupled with a gentle disposition. Perfectly normal compared to the loonies looming around her. Treated by all like a sister and someone who churns out pleasant conversations.

Male Chauvinistic Pig

A I-AM-A-MAN-THEREFORE-I-AM-BETTER kinda guy. Takes no advice from women and is only susceptible to instructions from superiors. Thank god, this man as joined the ranks as an ex-colleague. Will there be more to come?

Triple Celebration

The Da Vinci Code

If you are avid reader, i am sure that you have read Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, a conspiracy-theory thriller which is tantalizing and exceedingly clever. The book did touch on religious-sensitive issues and Dan Brown managed to surprise readers with shocking revelations. If you have not read the book, this may be a spoiler for you. Be patient , as the movie starring Tom Hanks is due for release this May!

The most shocking revelation in the book came when Sir Leigh Teabing was giving the results of his study on the Holy Grail. It is wide belief that the Holy Grail is a chalice, or the Cup of Christ. Teabing noticed an oddity in Da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper. In the painting, there was no sign of any chalice and it seems that Leonardo Da Vinci had forgotten to paint the Cup of Christ in the painting but how can it be?

Teabing came to a conclusion that the Holy Grail is not a cup, but a person. How did he come up with this theory? In ancient symbols, the women is depicted by the symbol shaped like a letter 'V', or a chalice. A chalice resembles a cup and more importantly, it looks like the shape of a woman's womb. Hence the Grail's description as a chalice is actually a smokescreen to protect its true identity : a woman.

Who is this woman? The Last Supper is supposed to depict 13 men. If we look closely at the painting, the supposed 'man' on the right of Jesus Christ is unmistakably a woman! The woman is believed to be Mary Magdalene. A closer look at the painting will make you see that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were wearing clothes of inverse colours, or as quoted in the book, "yin and Yang". This piece of information suggested that Mary Magdalene was Jesus Christ's bride. Another glaring clue from the painting is that the space between Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ was shaped like a chalice. Too much of a coincident?

This book is fictional but how much of it is true? Like other readers, i'm still wondering. Can't wait for the movie to reach the theaters!

Famous Malaysians

Hello fellow Malaysians out there! Have you ever wondered which of our citizens have actually carved a name on the international arena ? I happened to came across an article which featured some of the more famous Malaysians. I will share it with you for your reading pleasure.

Something i noticed is that from the list, most are entertainers in performing arts or fashion designers. Wow, i never knew that Malaysians are such artists! On the other hand, i am pretty disappointed that there are no famous people in the academics field. Why no scientists? Historians? And what the hell is Alex Yoong doing in the list?

Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad
In politics since 1945, Tun Dr Mahathir was the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981-2003. Winning 4 successive elections, he gave the country a political stability that allowed for investment and economic growth.

Datuk Seri Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi
Taking over after Tun Dr Mahathir stepped down, Datuk Seri Abdullah is the fourth and current Prime Minister of Malaysia. In the general elections of 2004, he led Barisan Nasional coalition to a landslide victory. Since being in office, Datuk Seri Abdullah has called for modern and progressive Islamic rule.

Anwar Ibrahim
The one-time protégé and former deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was convicted of corruption and sodomy in 2000 and sentenced to 9-year’s jail. In 2004 the conviction was reversed by an appeals court and he was released.

Siti Nurhaliza
A music icon in Malaysia, Siti Nurhaliza is known as the ‘Celine Dion of Asia’. Born in 1979, she began her singing career at age 12 and has since produced an album every year since 1996 and won numerous awards.

This Miss Malaysia of 1983 is best known as the Bond girl in Tomorrow Never Dies and the female lead in the award-winning movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

A menacing pig that attacks whenever provoked. One of my favourite monsters to hunt in the beginning. They mostly reside at the beach area near the town of Henesys. They run pretty fast so beware~

Chinese New Year

春节 is here! It is also known as the Chinese lunar new year and marks the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar. Legeng has it that a monster by the name of Nian could infiltrate homes silently. It came to the people's understanding that Nian was sensitive to loud noises and the colour red. Thus this brought to the current customs during Chinese new year where everyone don red clothes and using firecrackers.

On a personal note, i love Chinese new year cos it's a time for me to feast away. Be it abalone, fish maw, sea cucumber or mama's Hainanese Chicken Rice or meatballs, they are nice dishes to share with the family on a special reunion. Part of the fun comes from baking cookies and making minuscule meat floss popiahs with my erjie ( the size of our mini popiah is about half of normal on sale ones!) The TV in my house is virtually switched on for most of the time to add to the festive mood.

During the 2nd day of chinese new year, MIB 3 will be back and our family will get really busy showering them with attention. The living room would then be strewn with toys and the house gets really noisy...With MIB 3 around, i'm sure Nian would stay away cos he'll be terrified of their loud voices...haha.

Ahhh...the joys of Chinese New year....

Superstitions

Stump

A continuation to my introduction of Maple monsters. The stump looks like an uprooted tree. It is not much of an attacking monster as it is extremely slow. Can be found almost anywhere on the map.

Bored to the Core

I'm still alive! No updates for several days but i'm still alive and kicking. I've been keeping myself occupied with some meaningful endeavours... =D

First and foremost a hearty congratulations to Sheau Ching and Shin Yen who announced their engagement on New Year day! What a brilliant start to a brand new 2006! Shin Yen has been a buddy for 13 years of my life and i truly wish her well.

In midweek, it was rendezvous with 2 old pals whom i have not seen for many years. I enjoyed a heart-warming dinner at Crystal Jade Seafood Kitchen on Thursday night with Yi Min and Fely. It was my first time meeting up with Yi Min (AKA Dr. Wan) in 6 years and with Fely in 3 years. Appearances and habits may have changed significantly but friendship remains strong.

Yesterday was Gromit day. Watching Gromit and Wallace capturing the were-rabbit that was savaging the crops of the villagers preparing for the Giant Vegetable Competition tickled my funny bones to the max! It's shocking how simple movements of Gromit's forehead can emote so many different expressions....

Working today... Bored... "-.-

The beauty of Kong

3 hour 10 mins. A very thin-veiled message was sent through the big screen, on how human's lust for fame and fortune can be placed above everything else. Through Kong, we saw the purest form of love; a love that transcends the species and language barrier between himself and Ann Darrow.

Set in the Great Depression era, it is every man for himself. Carl Denham was depicted as the heartless brute who was willing to do anything for money. The portrayal of this character brings to us the realisation that in us, there IS a small part of Carl Denham. All of us are selfish and like him, the human race has been exploiting various specimens of nature.

Kudos to a great Brontosaurus stampede scene complete with accompanying raptors, a jaw-breaking fight between Kong and the T-rexes and giant centipedes (megapedes?) crawling out of tree trunks. To Ann Darrow, i applaud you for a great set of lungs =)

Very enjoyable and evoked a lot of thinking. Sadly in the end, the beauty did kill the beast.

Red Snail

Similar in appearance to the blue snail, this is a tougher and more stubborn opponent. During my beginner stint , i used to loath this snail to death cos it took up a lot of time to get rid of it. Now, no problem at all!

In a glance

In a blink of an eye, another year has just swept past me. Fortunately ( or unfortunately) this year is pretty much uneventful . It’s the time of the year to make new year resolutions for the coming calendar but I really am not the kind who is into making resolutions. Most people break them anyway, so what the hell…

Career wise, I have improved tremendously since my novice days. It is still pretty daunting to make important decisions that will affect tonnes of output, but the job gets easier as my confidence grows. People in the lab are very close and intimate and we hang out together, which is great for working relations. Of course for every fast friend, you get a bitter rival. You can never escape the politics bitch nor the cunning backstabber. On the other hand, learn to live with them… haha…This year I welcome 2 new-found friends, li’l sis Annie and Jianwen but lost a great buddy who has since relocated to New Zealand. The lab has not been the same without him…

I’m also finding more ways for my money to grow, but of course that’s my secret…heehee

As for my family, everyone is in the pink of health, with no big health threats so I’m thankful for that. Papa, Mama n Puffy are enjoying a quiet retreat back home ; dajie is busy with the MIB ; erjie is shuttling between kuching , shah alam n kuantan ; finally Frosty is sleeping and eating his days away.

I am also glad that my peers are finding success in their chosen paths. My friends in Singapore are all immersed in never-ending workload and are still able to find time for birthday celebrations and gatherings. Also a word of thanks to Hsin-hui and Tong Wooi who looked me up when they dropped by from UK and Canada respectively. As for Chih Yin (who recently started blogging too!), thanks for keeping in touch. Our friendship means a lot to me as well. Of course I can’t forget Joyce… we did ‘many’ things together , in fact more than we did when we were in KE. We still watch F1 every fortnightly and now exchange maple tips.

My gratitude to 闷蛋 for supporting this site and for being an ardent reader.. xD

In 2005, we saw the debut of Lost and Desperate Housewives. And TV is saved from catastrophe following the demise of popular sitcoms ‘Friends’, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, ‘Frasier’ and ‘Sex and the City’. A fresh change from the saturation of reality shows 24/7.

In sports, a good year indeed. Federer dominated, Alonso drove like a man possessed, Chelsea swept all before them, Liverpool beat the odds to lift the European Cup, emergence of Michelle Wie in golf, Valentino Rossi’s dominance was unbeaten , Joscelin Yeo won more SEA games medals for Singapore… wait..i don’t really care about that last bit. :P

Not a very good year for the global community as a whole. The year started badly with the Boxing day tsunami which affected the regions too close for comfort. Who’d expect more were to come like the Bali ‘encore’ bombing and Pakistan quake? Another incident that I recall would be the England tube and bus simultenous bombing that came a day after the announcement that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympics. I was in Kyoto when I heard the news and was shocked beyond words, coupled by the fact that I had a few friends residing in London. Also, not to mention the bird flu scare that rocked the region for much of the year.

And now, 2006 is a few weeks away. Time to sing Auld Lang Syne… and a toast to a better year in store. Cheers!

Shroom

The easiest mushroom to deal with is called the Shroom. I personally like the way they keel over and die when you attack them with enough power. They walk in a wobbly way...sort of like a penguin... More mushrooms are in store after you are able to kill shrooms.

Blue Snail

A dull-looking blue snail. Moves slightly faster than the green snail but is still as easy to kill. Can be easily found at many places but is not as common as the green version one. Aren't they cute?

Snail

This is my first blog on maple monsters. He is called the snail. Moves at a very slow pace and is a target for all beginners. Gives a meagre amount of money when defeated. Can be found at almost everywhere in Victoria Island. They are normally gliding around at portal exit areas.

English or Indian Customs?

This Indian man moved into his new home in England. His English neighbour, being the nice bloke that he was, decided to make him feel welcome. He went next door to wish him welcome. He was shocked to see the Indian man in his nice backyard chasing ten chickens around like mad."Must be an Indian custom" he thought to himself. Deciding he could put off the welcome till a later date, he went home. The next day, he decided he was going to welcome the Indian man again.When he looked through his window, he saw the Indian man urinate into a cup and drink it."Must be an Indian custom" he thought to himself. Deciding he could put off the welcome till tomorrow, he went on with other stuff. The third day, he was determined he had to welcome the Indian man. At his gate, he saw the Indian man with his ear pressed against a cow's big fat butt. He became angry and went up to the Indian man."I'm sorry sir, I want to wish you a welcome, but I cannot stand your crazy Indian customs!" He yelled in the Indian man's face.The Indian man looked confused and answered. "Sorry sir, I think you are mistaken. These are actually English customs. I was told, to be English, you have to chase chicks, get piss drunk, and listen to bullshit."

Maple Story

Why did Puffyrazzi go all quiet for a long time without blogging anything? Truth is, i've been hooked playing an online game which lets u interact with people in the region whilst having fun simultaneously. The game is called Maple story.

Now, i will introduce the 4 different jobs one can take up in the world of Victoria Island. The first being the warrior (1st photo). They are supposedly the honourable heroes of the island. My own character is a warrior currently at 2nd job advancement, a Fighter. Prior to the promotion, i was a swordman. A warrior can inflict heavy damage on monsters but are prone to have their kill stolen by other characters.

2nd jobline is the bowman. They travel around bringing their lethal crossbows . Though not the most popular job around, they are able to multi-bomb monsters and make them see stars.

Third picture depicts a Magician. Undoubtedly the most popular job in the game, they are not very well received by other characters. This may be caused by their knack of stealing other characters' kill by using their wands from afar. The magician is often draped in attractive clothes and can almost be found at every corner of Victoria Island as their flexibility enable them to easily defeat any monsters.

Last but not least, the Thief. Their name suggests that they are the troublemakers but truth is, they are pretty fun to watch. They also have an array of beautiful clothes to choose from and are based in Kerning City. I love to party with them and watching the star-throwers in action.

Enough introduction of the characters, probably my next blog i can introduce more of the baddies, the monsters!

Tea Eggs

My mom sent me this recipe ages ago but i have yet to try it. I am now sharing this in hope that someone else will be able to savour the wonderful taste of tea eggs.

It is a seasoned hard-cooked egg dish that is popular in the chinese culture. The eggs are simmered in a aromatic tea-based liquid which later leaves an attractive marble-ized pattern when they are peeled. I present you with the recipe e-mailed by Puffyrazzi's Mama :

10 Egggs

4 Tbsps chinese tea leaves

3 Tbsps thick soya sauce

1 Tbsps salt with 1/2 tsp sugar

15gm tong kwai

10 gm tong sam

10 gm pak kee

10 gm yok chok

5 gm kee chee

Boil eggs with water till cooked,drain the water,gently tap the eggs with the back of a spoon to crack the whole shells. Return eggs(with the shells on) to sauce pan and add water to cover eggs completely. Stir in all the ingredients and bring to the boil. Either reduce heat to a very low and simmer for 3 hours or place them in the crockpot for 3 hours. After that can drain and let cool.
