New Addition to the Family

Welcome aboard...there's a new member in the Wee family!! Let me introduce him to everyone, his name is QQ. He looks abit like the long-lost relative of those cute, furry Ewoks from the Star Wars movie. Must be some sort of a distant relative or something like that la... i guess Shih Tzus all look like Ewoks =)

Anyway, his birthday was on 11/9/2006, he is just about 10 days shy of 3 months old. The emphasis right now is on his date of birth. We were really glad to have found a dog whose birth date will not be hassle to remember ( i can't really recall Puffy's DOB, just know it was sometime around June 1998). Little did we know that with his date of birth, came the famous traits of recent terrorist' attacks. He likes to drop 'bombs' around our house, zips around in a fast and unpredictable manner, making it hard for 'government' ( read : my parents) to keep up.

Healthy Korean Fare Part I

Last month, i had the chance to visit a country with very delicious and easy looking food. Sure, it tastes a little bland for a frequent laksa and KFC eater staying in the 'salty and oily' land of Singapore !

Today i will share some photos and description of the quintessential Korean fare that i had the privilege of trying out over there in Korea.

First up is a series of 3 photos of what i would call DIY fried rice, Korean style. I had this right at the base of Naejangsan National Park. After we had settle down in our seats, the waiters brought us each a plate of rice with meat, raw vegetable and egg. It was all donned on a thick hot rock plate.

Prior to frying, this dish actually looks like Mt Naejangsan itself! Haha! They both mountain-shaped and colourful!

We were then instructed to fry the rice quickly and thoroughly to prevent burning and to ensure the egg was totally cooked and safe for consumption. It was a very healthy meal, with its accompanying green side dishes. I could've done with more salt and pepper though :)

On one of my nights there, i tried Haemultang (seafood stew). Various seafood is boiled before adding red pepper paste and red pepper powder. The taste was both refreshing and very spicy. Not one of my top picks though.

Now, doesn't this look like something out of Fear Factor? Sorta like fried worms of some sort teehee. Actually, if u look closely, you will be able to see that it is in fact, fried squid. In a Chinese context, this may not be the most prosperous of names ( chao yao yu), but the little hint of spicyness, coupled with the juiciness of the squid, Oh my lord, it really tasted like something they serve in heaven! Top pick top pick!

Now, what do we have here? This is Korean seafood steamboat. We had a lot of seafood during the couple of days we were in Jeju Island. Being an island and all, Jeju is famous for its freshly caught seafood. This mouth-watering meal came complete with crab, clam, shrimp, fish and other goodies. Oooh yea!

I can't really recall what kind of steamboat i had on my first day. I only remember that it had a lot of fresh vegetable in it. Look at the side dish closest to the cameraman, that is the King of all Korean dishes, KIMCHI! Cabbages and other vegetables are soaked in salt water, then seasoned with different spices before being fermented. I have to admit that personally, i really really h ate Kimchi. But i had to try the Korean version while i was there and it was a little better compared to what we have over here, but i still hate it hohoho...

Schumi's Hall of Shame

Michael Schumacher, the greatest driver ever to grace the formula one scene, ever. If you think this post of mine is to glorify him further, then you're obviously wrong! People living around me are only too aware of my hatred for this androgynous-looking chap. Therefore, today i am opening up an inventory of past Schumi controversies. The top three are what i call the 'Big Three' while the rest are up to you to decide what went wrong.

NUMBER ONE

Where : Adelaide 1994

The last race of a season that was marred by the death of F1 legend and season favourite Ayrton Senna. Schumi went into the race 1 point ahead of arch rival Damon Hill. On lap 36, Schumi ran wide and clipped a wall, damaging his car, in the process. Hill did not see this little accident and when he arrived at the turn, he quickly seized the opportunity to overtake Schumi who was out of the racing line. Schumi turned into Hill's car, taking both of them out of the race. Michael Schumacher won his first world title there and then.

Schumi's explanation : His steering wheel was not working properly and he did not see Hill nipping in from behind, hence caushing him to drive into Hill while getting back into the racing line.

Consequence : Nothing. No punishment whatsoever.

NUMBER TWO

Where : Jerez 1997

A sense of deja vu for all in the paddock as Schumi headed into the final race 1 point ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. Prior to the race, Schumi declared that it will be a straight fight on the track instead of being decided by a collision or in court. Tsk tsk... if he had only known....

On lap 48, at the Dry Sac corner, Villeneuve sliced down on the inside of Schumi's car in a lightning quick move to overtake. In a moment of desperation, Schumi lunged across the track in an attempt to cripple Villeneuve's car in a repeat of Adelaide 1994. In an odd twist of fate, Schumi's car spun into the gravel trap, Villeneuve finished the race to be crowned world champion.

Schumi's explanation : Jacques was attempting to overtake far too late into the corner. If he ( Schumi ) had not been there to block Jacques, he would've spun out of control at the corner. In short, JV used Schumi as a bolster to pull off a successful overtaking manoeuvre. Wow, Schumi made himself sound like a good samaritan.

Consequence : FIA summoned Schumi to appear in their court in Paris. Schumi was stripped of his 2nd place in the championship but allowed to keep points and wins. Gah, i thought the penalty was ridiculously lenient. Hey, not just me, but almost the entire F1 paddock thought so too =)

NUMBER THREE

Where : Monaco 2006

To tell you the truth, this is my all-time favourite! The incident occurred during qualifying at the Rascasse corner and this incident is now affectionately known as Rascasse-gate. Schumi had set the fastest qualifying lap and was on provisional pole. His rival Fernando Alonso was on his way to erasing that result. Schumi who was ahead of Alonso, sort of zig-zagged at the last corner, losing control and parked his car on the circuit. The session was yellow-flagged, forcing Alonso to slow and lose potential pole position. Many observers argued that it was a plot meticulously plotted by a driver in desperation. It was also bizarre that such a basic error could happen to an establised superstar and his car was unscathed.

Schumi's Explanation : He locked up his tyres, misjudged the corner and lose control.

Consequence : A public outcry by the formula 1 community for unsporting behaviour. Quotes from 2 past world champs ; Jackie Stewart " This was too blatant. When you see it in slow motion, turning the wheel one way and then the other, he had plenty of time to do something."

Keke Rosberg " He's a cheap cheat. He should go home and leave the sport to honest people". The race stewards decided that the action was intentional and moved his starting position to the back of the grid. Their statement after the announcement came as " If he'd damaged his car, we'd probably have filed the incident as an error. As it was, to park it like that, you can only do that deliberately. " Hurrah!

BEST OF THE REST ( Other minor controversies)

Australia 2005

Schumi tangled with Nick Heidfeld. Track marshals ignored the stranded Heidfeld but helped push Schumi's car back onto the track. Heidfeld retired from the race. Talk about preferential treatment!

Britain 2004

Schumi spun his car during first qualifying. This was a move to ensure that he could come out for qualifying first in the 2nd session, beating the expected rain. He qualified on the front row (before the rain), while Kimi Raikkonen and Alonso near the back of the grid due to qualifying laps in the rain.

Austria 2002

Rubens Barrichello led for much of the race only to let teammate Schumi through to win on the last lap after receiving orders from the Ferrari team through the radio.

Germany 2001

After a collision at the start with Burti, Schumi drove his damaged car to the middle of the track and stalled there in an attempt to get the race red-flagged for a restart. It worked...

Britain 1998

Became the first ever driver to win a race while parked in the pitlane. He was penalised for a stop-go penalty. Schumi paid his penalty on the last lap, avoiding the slow out-lap that would cost the win. Sly....

School Days Part II

1993 - I finally grew up and was promoted to secondary school. Just to sum up, my secondary school was an eyesore, really. It was painted pink all over, i guess that's what you would expect when your principal's name is Mimi Asmara.

I was originally posted to another co-ed school nearby but divine intervention landed me in this school instead. I was ecstatic, and really enjoyed every single moment there.

1993 was the year i picked up softball. It was to be an integral part of my life for the next 5 years. Till today, i am able to recall that fateful first training. I was a scrawny dancer back then and i had no idea how to toss the ball. I have a feeling that my coach really liked me =) She never once raised her voice at me, not even when i somehow miraculously injured both my hamstring muscles during a tournament and my teammates told me i was in for a scolding back then. Aside from the stitches i needed for the torn eyelid, the twisted fingers and 4-hour daily training leading up to a tournament, i must admit i didn't know i could derive so much joy from chasing a small little leather ball in a large diamond field.

1994-95 - I don't have much recollections from these 2 years except that i was a quiet student. I was not a prefect, in fact i was not a leader at all. I preferred to keep a very low profile in class, i guess. Oh ya! One of the big news back then really left us shell-shocked. My Living Skills teacher was found dead in his house. Apparently, he was electrocuted whilst he was trying to change the lightbulb in his living room. Talk about irony ; the person who educated us just weeks earlier on how to change the lightbulb in our homes actually perished doing what he was supposed to know best. Speaking of Living Skills, all schools in Malaysia back then introduced this subject to teach students the various skills in life. Be it starting a business as an entrepreneur, erecting impressive woodworks, sewing, cooking, gardening, to recognising wires in a socket to drawing architecture plans to cleaning the toilet, you name it, it's there! I wonder if they still keep this subject in the education system...hmmm....

1996-97 - In Sec 4, all students in Malaysia are streamed into different branches. I chose the Science Stream. I must admit i sucked in Science and Maths back then, so i'm wondering if it was peer pressure that made me do it ! I was never one to grasp logical concepts and i totally hated anything to do with numbers!!! Nevertheless, i was always in the top 5 in school. It wasn't my fault , you know. I had no choice but to turn into a nerd. I had no computer then, no ICQ, no MSN Messenger, no internet and *Oh My God* no cable TV!

Being in a secondary school back home was relaxing. They didn't put unnecessary pressure on you to perform. If you did below expectations, it's not the end of the world, and you wouldn't feel like shit. Sad to say, my happy-go-lucky and laidback lifestyle was brought to an abrupt change the following year as i was thrusted into a different education system in a neighbouring country.

Even now, years later, i would still wonder what might've been, have i chose to stay in my homeland at that juncture. Would i have turned out differently? Would i have been a better person? Haizzz....

I'm gonna talk about 1998-1999 next time. Ciaoz

Lame Singaporean Joke

One day, there were an American, one Italian, a Singaporean a Bangladeshi traveled around on a private helicopter.After about one hour of travelling, the American took out his cigarette Dunhill, lighted it up and started smoking after two sip, he threwt he balance of the cigarette. The other three persons were surprised and asked ; Why didn't you finish-up the cigarette before throwing?"He replied arrogantly, "There is a lot of cigarettes in my country."Half an hour later, the Italian took out a bottle of branded perfume and applied on him and the rest he threw out of the window. The other three persons were surprised and asked,;Why did you throw away the perfume?"The Italian replied also, "There is a lot of perfume in my country."The Singaporean didn't know what to do & suddenly pushed that Bangladeshi out of the helicopter. The other two persons shouted crazily, "Why did you push him !?"The Singaporean said slowly, "There is a lot of Bangladeshi in my country!" Everybody kept quiet and stayed away from the Singaporean.

Royal Tragedy

News excerpt from Star Online, Malaysia. The news is regarding a neighbour of mine who was murdered yesterday :

KUANTAN: A Pahang princess was stabbed to death and her husband seriously injured after they were attacked by one of their sons at their villa here.

Tengku Datuk Puteri Kamariah Sultan Abu Bakar, 64, was stabbed in the back while trying to protect her husband Tunku Datuk Ismail Tunku Sulaiman from their 21-year-old son Tunku Shahzan.
The incident occurred at about 1.20pm yesterday in Villa Ismaputri, Lorong Kubang Buaya, here. Tengku Datuk Puteri Kamariah is the half-sister of Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang.

About six hours later, Tunku Shahzan died at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. Police
had earlier arrested him at the villa.
Tunku Ismail, who is a member of the Negri Sembilan royalty, is reported to be in stable condition after undergoing an operation at the same hospital.
Tunku Shahzan, who died at 7.35pm, was believed to have been under the influence of designer drugs when he tried to slash his father repeatedly for no apparent reason. He was the youngest of the couple’s eight children.

A relative living next to the villa, Tengku Ahmad Faisal Tengku Abdul Jamil, said Tunku Shahzan was acting strangely.
“He first jumped out of the side balcony and walked on the fibreglass roof before jumping into my house compound,” said Tengku Ahmad Faisal, who is related to Tengku Datuk Puteri Kamariah.
“He looked strange, and his eyes were red and bulging. When I questioned him, he replied 'Takut, takut', then dashed across the road like a man possessed.”

Sensing something amiss, Tengku Ahmad Faisal went over to Villa Ismaputri to investigate and heard cries for help from the couple’s maid.
“I saw Tunku Ismail slumped on the chair on the veranda, with a slash wound in his abdomen. With the help of several friends, we chased after Tunku Shahzan, overpowered him and tied him up,” he added.
Tengku Ahmad Faisal said he then went back to the villa and found Tengku Datuk Puteri Kamariah bleeding profusely in the kitchen.
“She was very weak. Before drawing her last breath, she muttered: ‘Belajar ugama. Kalau nak jual, juallah kereta tu.’ (Learn the religion. If you want, sell off the car),” recalled Tengku Ahmad Faisal, adding that he did not understand what Tengku Datuk Puteri Kamariah meant.
“She died in my arms.”

At press time, Tunku Ismail, 69, had yet to be informed of his wife's or son's death.
The tragedy shattered the quiet affluent neighbourhood, and residents there could only shake their heads in disbelief. The shocking news spread within minutes and quickly became the talk of the town.
State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Razak Bokhari said police, who arrived at the villa after receiving a call earlier, had found Tunku Shahzan tied up.
They also recovered a “Rambo” knife and a screwdriver, believed to be the murder weapons.
“The case has been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. We are still investigating the motive for the attack,” he said.
Tengku Datuk Puteri Kamariah is expected to be buried at the burial ground for royalty in Pekan before Zohor prayers today.

School Days Part I

Looking back, what is the best time of your life? School days? I hear a resounding 'yes' in my ear right now.. haha. I can't make up my mind which school days were the happiest for me. Let me take a stroll down the joyful path of school memories ;

1985 - My first year in school. Back in my time, there was no such thing as pre-school, so my first taste of school was kindergarten. It was a Catholic School run by a nun called Sister Bernadette. The children all wore green uniforms with a dark green line running down the right side of it, it was really an eyesore. This is my blog so i guess i have some bragging rights. I was an angel in school, being the teacher's pet and always the first to be released into the playground during recess. It was in this school that i first learnt English which would eventually become my first language in life.

1987- I was promoted to primary school. My primary school was just 5 steps away from my previous school, being sister schools. I had a privilege of being in a school which gave minimal homework, thus my childhood during this time was spent playing, which i thought was great. I was glad that i grew up immersed in a pressure-free school and environment. My parents never demanded that i do well in school, for they know the greatest education does not come from school. I was just an average student then, but with my time off school i was able to pursue music. Though i hated it then, i am now grateful that i had a chance to get acquinted to the piano, harp, organ and harmonica. Music is now one of the core elements in my life that i can't imagine a minute without it. Be it at home or travelling in the bus, i still need a little music to get by with.

The lack of school work also meant i was able to get in a lot of play time in the afternoons. I used to get cheeky with my neighbourhood friends, and we would be playing different games by the roadside everyday. Even exams were not able to put this routine aside haha. On rainy days, we became TV junkies, watching cartoons or one of those lame TV shows (e.g. Get Smart, Happy Days, The Saint etc.)

Coming up, as soon as i'm free to write, 1993 onwards....

World Cup Blues Kick In

Oh my god, what a rubbish world cup it had been. The teams i had been supporting were out before they were due : Netherlands and Argentina. For Netherlands, blame it on the referee, and for Argentina blame it on coach Jose Peckermann. Sob sob...

And my favourite players, Lionel Messi hardly had a chance to play due to injuries suffered prior to the tournament. As for Michael Owen, hahaha...what a joke... Oh my god,don't even wanna talk about it.

Holiday Down Under!

Holiday in Australia!!! No no no...not me! Just sharing some very nice pictures taken by my friends who were in Australia recently. Mazc was in Adelaide for a week eating fish n chips, tasting different kinds of wines and soaking in the sights during the cool season in Australia. Here are a few photos of his visit:

Lastly, a photo of wendy in Gold Coast, Australia. Tweety bird needs to go on a diet. Anyhow, i think she enjoyed herself over there. Looks like fun!

Wedding Dresses

Many weddings have come and gone, but none belong to my closest circle for friends... until now. Shin Yen is finally tying the knot this October. I was given the privelege of kay poh-ing during her dress fitting... Haha~ Gosh, she tried on so many dresses but i'm veri sorry i am not able to post all the photos here. Blame it on the camera batteries which went flat =(

The most regrettable thing is, most of the dresses here are not even gonna be worn during the wedding nor the photo shoot. I believe that the gown in the last photo will be used for her church wedding. Pretty simple and sweet huh?

One of the nicest dress Shin Yen tried on was a gold beaded evening ball gown and it looked simply ravishing on her! Oh dear, the camera died long before that though so i really apologise for the lack of proof to back my words here... haha~ Anyway, we might be able to see it for ourselves during her wedding reception in Kuantan =) (that is, for those who are invited heh heh). I shall try to post more AFTER the wedding itself.
